Beginners Introduction

Moroccan Natural Waterproof Plaster

Create up to 3 Tadelakt Balls or Tiles

We are so excited to be sharing our love of this amazing, ancient, beautiful plastering technique originally used in Morocco for waterproofing water cisterns and public baths.

Tadelakt utilises Lime, Sand, Olive Oil Soap, and Pigment, and is then burnished by a precious stone to seal the surface and close its pores. There is a chemical reaction between the Olive Oil Soap and the Calcium Carbonate in the Lime, which makes a permanently waterproof surface, which is easy to clean, and exceptionally beautiful!

You will have the option to attempt one, two or three cob balls or small cement sheet tiles, depending on your ambition and previous skill. We highly recommend beginning with one, which can be completed within the first 2-3 hours, then seeing if you feel drawn to attempt another one to two, depending on your energy and enthusiasm.

We have deliberately chosen cob balls as a base, so that students can head out into the world and create whatever form or shape they want out of cob, and make it waterproof and beautiful! A HUGE game-changer in their natural building toolkit. We will also be offering small cement sheet tiles, which is a more traditional, but also very popular conventional technique used in bathrooms in standard family homes, where a plasterer would install large sheets of cement backing, and then apply large surfaces of Tadelakt.

This is a beginners workshop aimed at those who have never attempted it before, and we have deliberately chosen materials which are readily available at all major hardware and agricultural supply stores, so you can easily repeat the process at your own home.

All materials and tools will be supplied, plus a showbag of Tadelakt mix to take home and use on your future explorations, if you wish.

You will need to source your own trowel, soap, and precious stone if you wish to continue exploring at home. We will give full details of how and where to acquire all of these things.

The workshop will be run by Hayden and Millie of the Curvatecture team, who have a wealth of knowledge on Natural Building techniques and their many applications, and are happy to chat throughout the day and share our journey in the wonderful world of Natural Building. It will be held at Curvatecture’s new home, Dalpura Farm, which is 10 minutes from Anglesea.

SNACKS WILL BE SERVED, BUT PLEASE BRING MORE SUBSTANTIAL FOOD OR DRINK IF YOU WILL NEED IT
